If you're interested in history and architecture, the Kennebunks offer a number of interesting and educational walking tours. The Kennebunkport Historical Society publishes an excellent brochure detailing three different village tours ranging from less than a mile to 1 1/2 miles and lasting between one and 1 1/4 hours.
The Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk sponsors guided architectural walking tours of the historic district . Following is a brief description of the Brick Store Museum's Architectural Walking Tour. To enjoy this fascinating walk to the fullest, we highly recommend reading the Brick Store Museum's book, written by Rosalind Magnuson.
Kennebunk's National Register Historic District Village Walk; This walk begins at the Brick Store Museum on Main St. in Kennebunk. It takes you through the village on a tour that shows you the many architectural styles and influences employed over the centuries in this seacoast town. From the Brick Store Museum, you turn south on Main St. (left as you leave the Museum). If you go left on Dane St., you'll find Christ Church, a handsome 1828 Greek Revival building. Go back to Main Street and continue past the Nathaniel Frost House (99 Main St.) built in 1799, the Benjamin Brown House (85 Main St.) built in 1788, the Baptist Church, and the Horace Porter House (92 Main St.) notable for its Doric columns and Greek Revival temple style.
From here, turn back up Main Street toward the Museum. Go past the Unitarian Church, and turn right down Summer St., one of the most architecturally significant streets in the village. The homes along Summer St. show the growth and change in architectural styles in the early years of this country. For example, the Elisha Chadbourne House (13 Summer St.) is a colonial-style residence built in the 1790s; the Phineas Hemmenway House (15 Summer St.) incorporates both Colonial and Federal characteristics; and the Captain Nathaniel Lord Thompson House (23 Summer St.) built circa 1842 is an excellent example of a Greek temple style-residence.
